Founders Award

Founder's Award

The NACE Foundation created The Founders Award to honor individuals who have made a significant contribution toward our goal of advancing corrosion education.

It will be used to recognize exceptional contributions on behalf of individuals who have significantly enhanced the stature of the NACE Foundation.

2008 Founders Award Recipient:
Walter B. Poff

Walter PoffThe 2008 Founders Award is presented to Walter B. Poff. Poff was President of NACE International in 1985-1986 and is a very active member of the Past Presidents' Council. Through his activities with this prestigious group of past NACE presidents, Poff has been instrumental in the creation of the Past Presidents' Endowed Scholarship, in memory of Darrel Byerley, to be administered by the NACE Foundation.

Poff has spent his career working in the field of corrosion and, although he is retired, his dedication to the field of corrosion science continues. He remains dedicated to the field through such efforts as establishing scholarships that will encourage future generations to pursue careers in the corrosion industry.

It is only appropriate that the NACE Foundation award Mr. Poff the Founders Award as an outstanding individual who has done so much for the corrosion community and education in particular. The NACE Foundation would like to thank Mr. Poff for his continued contributions and commitment.

2007 Founders Award Recipient:
Terry May

Terry MayThe Foundation is proud to honor Terry May as this year's recipient of the Founders Award. Terry served as the inaugural president of the newly formed NACE Foundation after reorganization of the NACE International Endowment Committee in 2002. His strategic vision has resulted in a thriving organization that is fulfilling its mission to inspire students and educators to engage in the field of corrosion science and engineering.

Terry has been instrumental in the Foundation's successful beginnings and its outreach to the public and, in particular, to students and teachers who are benefiting from the NACE Foundation's scholarship, awards, and travel aid programs, in addition to the partnership with the ASM Foundation that has resulted in the introduction of corrosion technology into high school science curriculum in hundreds of schools.

Terry has spent his entire career devoted to the corrosion industry. He founded MESA Products and has built a company from a one-man operation to one employing over 70 people, all involved in the cathodic protection and corrosion industry. He has not only been a role model in his service to the NACE Foundation, but has created a benchmark company for the corrosion industry—recently, it was announced that MESA will receive the prestigious 2006 Malcolm Baldridge Award for Small Business.

His passion for, leadership of, and financial commitment to the NACE Foundation is the fundamental reason for its success in its infancy stage. Thank you, Terry, from everyone past and present who will benefit from your vision and efforts.

2006 Founders Award Recipient:
Stanley Lopata

Stanley LopataThis year, we unanimously voted to present the Founders Award in memory of Stanley Lopata. Mr. Lopata was the first Chairman of the NACE International Endowment Committee in l986. He was also the Treasurer of NACE International 1986 - l988. In addition to serving as the first Chairman of this Committee (which functioned as a committee of the NACE Board), Mr. Lopata made the first donation of $10,000 to the NACE Foundation.

As founder of Carboline Corporation, Mr. Lopata spent his entire life dedicated to the corrosion industry. NACE was only one organization which benefited from his talents and financial success. He was a l935 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where there is a building that bears his name—Stanley and Lucy Lopata Hall. There is also an award at the University of Missouri, St. Louis that is the Stanley Lopata Award of Excellence.

It is only appropriate that the NACE Foundation recognize this outstanding individual who did so much for the corrosion community and education in particular for the establishment of the NACE Foundation.

2005 Founders Award Recipient:
Darrel D. Byerley

Darrel Byerley, Sr.The Foundation chose a very special individual to be the first recipient of this award . . . Mr. Darrel D. Byerley.

We recently lost Darrel, but he was loved and respected by all at the Foundation. He was an active member of NACE since 1955, serving as President of NACE in 1974-1975. He held many distinguished NACE awards including the Russell A. Brannon Award. His professional accomplishments were truly a home grown success story!

While his service to NACE International was long and distinguished, this nomination for the inaugural NACE Foundation Founders Award was made for his vision to establish an educational foundation to further corrosion science and engineering.

He was one of the drivers in creating the original Endowment Committee in 1986 and it is just and appropriate that he be the first recipient of the Founders Award. While there are many individuals who have worked with us to see the NACE Foundation become a reality, we believe they all agree that there could be no other individual more deserving of this award.

He persisted over 15 years in his vision of establishing an educational outreach for NACE International through the Foundation. He made a career out of making a difference. His lifelong efforts are an inspiration to those of us who follow in his footsteps.
