NACE Foundation Summer Internship Program

Congratulations to the 2006 NACE Foundation Summer Internship recipient.
Kehlen Sachet
Olympia, Washington
Washington State University
The NACE Foundation has designed their summer internship program to target students (both graduate and undergraduate) interested in pursuing an education in the field of corrosion science and engineering.

This year, the NACE Foundation will be distributing the following type of summer internships:

  • One (1) summer internship with a sponsoring company/organization in the amount of $5,000 (undergraduate)

2.1 Foundation Student Scholarship Award Group (FSSAG) Procedures

2.1.1 The Committee shall have a NACE Foundation Student Scholarship Award Group (FSSAG), which shall work with the NACE Foundation to promote the success of the student internship program. The goal of this program is to allow students to work in a corrosion environment for the summer.

2.1.2 The FSSAG shall review award applications, recommend award recipients, monitor the progress of award recipients, report on the status of Foundation Student Scholarship Award activities to the Committee and the NACE Foundation, and administer other NACE scholarship grants. The FSSAG shall also work with the NACE Foundation to solicit applications for new student scholarship awards.

2.1.3 The FSSAG Chairman shall be appointed by the Committee Chair for a two-year term of office (or to fulfill an unexpired term of office). The FSSAG Chair may serve 3 two-year terms and each term of office ends on the day following the close of the annual conference.

2.1.4 FSSAG Members will include a Chair, Vice Chair, and as many individuals as considered appropriate by the Committee Chair. The FSSAG members may serve successive terms and each term of office ends at the close of the annual conference.

2.1.5 Internships shall be awarded on an annual basis, unless otherwise directed by the Committee and/or the NACE Foundation. All internships shall be awarded by the NACE Foundation, upon consideration of the recommendations of the FSSAG.

2.1.6 The NACE Foundation shall issue a letter to individuals in institutions of higher learning, soliciting applications annually, on or about September 15, unless otherwise directed by the Committee or the Board.

2.1.7 Upon receipt of the applications (and after passage of the deadline for receipt), NACE Foundation staff liaison will send applications to all FSSAG members, at least six weeks in advance of the deadline for the final Annual Conference Program. The FSSAG will review the applications and select recipients based on number of internships available and the quality of the applicants.

  • One alternate recipient will be chosen in the case that an applicant later becomes ineligible or cannot accept the internship in person. The FSSAG will ask the Committee for confirmation of the FSSAG selection by majority vote of a Committee quorum by an e-mail ballot. If, in the judgment of the FSSAG members no applications of adequate merit are received, the task group may refrain from recommending that any of the applications be selected for internship awards.

2.1.8 After selection of NACE Summer Internship recipient(s) and one alternate, the FSSAG Chair shall notify (by telephone and letter) NACE Headquarters and the NACE Foundation.

2.1.9 No action of the FSSAG shall conflict with any policy of NACE or with any of the documents governing the operation of NACE.

2.2 Type of Awards

2.2.1 Summer Internships - Funding to support undergraduate and graduate students to work in universities, government labs, or industry. The funding would go to the student for living expenses. It is expected (but not a given) that the sponsoring company/organization will provide supplemental funding to the student in addition to the funding provided through the NACE Summer Internship Program. The number and U.S. dollar amount of each internship shall be determined each year by the NACE Foundation.

  • The NACE Foundation will solicit sponsoring companies/organizations for summer internship positions. Job descriptions will be evaluated by the FSSAG to ensure appropriateness.
  • Upon completion of the summer internship, the student(s) shall submit a letter report to the FSSAG Chair and the NACE Foundation within six months after completion of the internship describing the goals, achievements, and corrosion and professional experience gained as a result of the internship.

2.3 Selection Criteria

2.3.1 The following criteria will be assessed in an application by the FSSAG to select the recipients of the summer internships:

  • Academic record, including a description of the school's grading system for student performance to help the FSSAG evaluators.
  • Professional and personal activities, in and out of school.
  • Detailed work experience particularly if related to corrosion work and activities.
  • Description of past/current/future research plans. Graduate students in particular, should describe their research project, focusing on their role.
  • Personal Profile Statement.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (for academic scholarships, one must be from a corrosion professional with whom the applicant has worked)
  • Students should explain why they want to do an internship in corrosion/corrosion control.

2.4 Eligibility Qualifications

2.4.1 Both North American (Northern, Eastern, Central, and Western Areas designated by NACE) and International (Europe, West Asia/Africa, East Asia/Pacific Rim, Latin America) students are eligible.

2.4.5 Eligibility for the summer internship requires that applicants be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program engaged in science and/or engineering related to the study of corrosion or corrosion control in a qualified college or university. Students enrolled in 2-year or junior colleges are eligible to apply.

2.4.6 Post-docs are not eligible.

2.4.7 Relatives of members of the FSSAG or of the funding committee/Foundation are not eligible.

2.5 Application Guidelines

2.5.1 Applications for all NACE internships are to be made by the students themselves.
