NACE Past Presidents Scholarship

At the 2005 NACE Annual Conference in Houston, the Past Presidents Council voted to create an ongoing memorial scholarship to honor all the past presidents of NACE International.

The Past Presidents Council was formulated at the NACE Annual Conference in 2003. It is an ad hoc committee of the NACE International Board of Directors, who, when requested by the Board, address and present recommendations on issues deemed important by the Board.

The membership of the Past Presidents Council consists of all persons that have completed a term as President of NACE International and not currently serving on the NACE Board of Directors.

NACE Past Presidents Scholarship Program Guidelines

Background

At the 2005 NACE Annual Conference in Houston, the Past Presidents Council voted to create an endowed scholarship which will be funded through personal contributions made by members of the Past Presidents Council.

Requirements

1.1 Past Presidents Scholarship Award Group (PPSAG)
1.1.1 The Committee shall have a NACE Past Presidents Scholarship Award Group (PPSAG), which shall work with the NACE Foundation to promote the success of Past Presidents Scholarship program. The goal of this program is to attract students to the fields of corrosion and corrosion control.

1.1.2 PPSAG Members will include a Chair, Vice Chair, and as many individuals as considered appropriate by the Committee Chair. The PPSAG members may serve successive terms and each term of office ends at the close of the annual conference.

1.1.3 The PPSAG Chairman shall be appointed by the Chairman of the Past Presidents Council for a two-year term of office (or to fulfill an unexpired term of office). The PPSAG Chair may serve 3 two-year terms and each term of office ends on the day following the close of the annual conference. The NACE Foundation shall appoint up to two (2) other individuals to serve on this Committee.

1.1.4 The PPSAG shall review applications, recommend award recipients, monitor the progress of award recipients, report on the status of Past Presidents Scholarship Award activities to the NACE Foundation. The PPSAG shall also work with the NACE Foundation to assist in the solicitation of applications for new student scholarship awards.

1.1.5 Scholarship(s) shall be awarded on an annual basis, unless otherwise directed by the Committee and/or the NACE Foundation. All scholarships shall be awarded by the NACE Foundation, upon consideration of the recommendations of the PPSAG

1.1.6 The NACE Foundation shall issue a letter to individuals in institutions of higher learning, soliciting scholarship applications annually, on or about September 15, unless otherwise directed by the Committee or the Board.

1.2 Type of Awards
1.2.1 Scholarships – Priority will be given to undergraduates that have prior experience in corrosion such as obtained through the NACE Foundation Internship Program. Applicants will be evaluated on the strength of their academic record and two recommendations (one of which must be from a corrosion professional with whom the applicant has worked).

The academic scholarship recipient(s) will submit a letter report to the PPSAG Chair and the NACE Foundation within one year after the initiation of the scholarship which shall document how the scholarship monies were utilized as well as provide any necessary backup information.

1.3 Selection Criteria
The following criteria will be assessed in an application by the PPSAG to select the recipients of the Past Presidents Scholarship:

  • Academic record, including a description of the school’s grading system for student performance to help the PPSAG evaluators;
  • Personal Profile Statement which will include professional and personal activities (in and out of school) as well as a detailed description of work experience & activities (particularly if related to corrosion field);
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation (from educators or employers)

1.4 Eligibility Qualifications
1.4.1 Both North American (Northern, Eastern, Central, and Western Areas designated by NACE) and International (Europe, West Asia/Africa, East Asia/Pacific Rim, Latin America) undergraduate students are eligible for this scholarship.

1.4.2 The NACE Foundation will specify the distribution of available awards on their Web site.

1.4.3 The monetary value of each scholarship and number of scholarships available will be determined by the NACE Foundation on or about September 1 prior to Annual Conference.

1.4.4 All undergraduate applicants must be NACE student members. Students not currently holding memberships may enclose, with their scholarship application, a completed NACE Student Membership Application (PDF), with dues payment, to become eligible.

1.4.5 In order to be eligible for the scholarship(s), applicants must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate, degree-granting program (B.A., B.S. degrees or their equivalent) engaged in science and/or engineering related to the study of corrosion or corrosion control in a qualified college or university.

1.4.6 The Past Presidents Scholarships are not to replace stipends or other financial support provided to students for their education by industry, universities, or other organizations.

1.4.7 All scholarships may be awarded for a second year, but priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Past Presidents Scholarship.

1.4.8 The academic scholarship recipients are encouraged to attend the NACE Annual Conference to receive their award. If they are not able to attend, the NACE Foundation will determine an appropriate venue in which they shall receive their scholarship award.

1.4.9 Academic scholarship recipient(s) are strongly encouraged to participate in the Student Poster Session during the NACE Annual Conference.

1.4.10 Student poster submissions may be involved with corrosion research in the following areas:

  1. New areas of corrosion research;
  2. Significant expansion of current research within the corrosion field; or
  3. Applied research, which will likely have practical value to business and industry.

1.4.11 Post-docs are NOT eligible for these scholarship awards.

1.4.12 Relatives of members of the PPSAG or of the funding committee/Foundation are not eligible.

1.5 Application Guidelines
1.5.1 Scholarship applications must be received at NACE Headquarters no later than December 1.

1.5.2 Applications for the Past Presidents Scholarship are to be made by the students themselves.

1.5.3 Applicants must submit their typed information on the official forms listed below:

1.5.4 Photocopies of the official Scholarship Application Forms may be reproduced locally.

1.5.5 In addition to information requested on the Scholarship Application Forms, student applicants must attach a Personal Profile Statement of 1,000 words or less, typed, double-spaced, describing career plans, reports on special projects, leadership roles, work experience, and community involvement and other information that may be pertinent to the application. This is an opportunity for the applicant to convey specific career plans relating to a particular area of interest.

1.5.6 Evidence of academic achievement (including rank in class, if available) is an important factor; therefore, a transcript or facsimile of recent academic record and current GPA is required. The institution should describe the grading system for student performance.

1.5.7 Applications should include two (2) official Recommendation Forms from educators or employers.

1.5.8 Applicants must submit four (4) photo copies of their completed application information. This includes ALL information (with the exception of sealed Recommendation Forms) which is to be considered by the selection committee (i.e. Application Form, typed essays, transcripts – with official copy, etc.).

1.5.9 Suitable press releases and announcements in CORROSION, Materials Performance, and the Final Annual Conference Program will also be prepared by staff in conjunction with the PPSAG Chair and the NACE Foundation.

1.5.10 Scholarship recipients will be required to submit a color photograph for publicity purposes.

1.5.11 Upon receipt of the scholarship applications (and after passage of the deadline for receipt), NACE Foundation staff liaison will send applications to all PPSAG members, at least six weeks in advance of the deadline for the final Annual Conference Program. The PPSAG will review the applications and select recipients based on number of scholarships or internships available and the quality of the applicants. One alternate recipient will be chosen in the case that an applicant later becomes ineligible. The PPSAG will ask the Committee for confirmation of the PPSAG selection by majority vote of a Committee quorum by an email ballot. If, in the judgment of the PPSAG members no applications of adequate merit are received, the task group may refrain from recommending that any of the applications be selected for scholarship awards.

1.5.12 After selection of the Past Presidents Scholarship recipient(s) and one alternate, the PPSAG Chair shall notify (by telephone and letter) NACE Headquarters and the NACE Foundation.

1.5.13 The scholarship recipient(s) shall submit a letter report to the PPSAG Chair and the NACE Foundation one year after reception of the scholarship describing how scholarship monies were utilized and how the award aided their undergraduate education.

1.5.14 No action of the PPSAG shall conflict with any policy of NACE or with any of the documents governing the operation of NACE.
