The NACE Foundation has designed its academic Scholarship/Award Program for students interested in pursuing an education in the field of corrosion science and engineering. This year, the NACE Foundation distributed the following:
This scholarship/award was presented at the NACE Annual Conference in New Orleans on Wednesday, March 19, 2008. Academic scholarship/award recipients are encouraged, but not required, to be present at the NACE Annual Conference to receive their awards. 2008 NACE Academic Scholarship Recipient
Zoe Coull, University of Toronto 2.1 Process Overview 2.1.1 The monetary value and number of each academic scholarship/award available will be determined by the NACE Foundation by September 1 each year prior to Annual Conference. 2.1.2 The NACE Foundation will specify the distribution of available scholarships/awards on their Web site by October 1 each year, prior to Annual Conference 2.1.3 The NACE Foundation Student Scholarship/Award Group (FSSAG) initiates a Selection Committee for scholarships and awards offered by the Foundation. 2.1.4 Upon receipt of the applications (and after passage of the deadline for receipt), NACE Foundation staff will send applications to FSSAG members. The FSSAG will review the applications and select recipients based on number of scholarships available and the quality of the applicants. 2.1.5 One alternate recipient may be chosen in the case that an applicant later becomes ineligible. 2.2 Type of Award 2.2.1 NACE Foundation Academic Scholarship
2.3 Selection Criteria 2.3.1 The following criteria will be assessed in an application by the FSSAG to select the recipients of the academic scholarships/awards:
2.4 Eligibility Qualifications 2.4.1 Eligibility requires that applicants be enrolled full time in an undergraduate or graduate program engaged in science and/or engineering related to the study of corrosion or corrosion control in an accredited college or university. Students enrolled in 2-year or junior colleges are eligible to apply.2.4.2 Post-doctorate students are not eligible. 2.4.3 Relatives of members of the FSSAG or of the funding committee/Foundation are not eligible. 2.4.4 The NACE academic scholarship/award is not intended to replace stipends or other financial support provided to students for their education by industry, universities, or other organizations. 2.4.5 The NACE academic scholarship/award must be used exclusively for costs associated with collegiate educational expenses. Such costs include: tuition or tuition loans, books, college fees, computer / computer software (if it can be shown it was directly related to the student's education in the sciences), etc. Personal items such as clothing, travel, automobiles, gasoline, etc., do not apply. 2.4.6 Funding recipients may apply for subsequent NACE Foundation scholarships/awards, but priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received funding from the NACE Foundation. 2.4.7 Applicants for the NACE Foundation Academic Scholarships/Awards must reside and attend a college/university in a country which the NACE Foundation may legally support. Any countries sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/) or individuals included on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) or Blocked Persons list are excluded from eligibility. 2.5 Application Guidelines 2.5.1 Applications for academic scholarships/awards are to be completed by the students themselves. Applicants must submit their typed information on the official forms listed below. A form may be downloaded from this site as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file or as an MS Word Document.
2.5.2 Personal Profile Statement. In addition to information requested on the Application Forms, student applicants must attach an individual statement of 500 words or less, typed, double-spaced, describing career plans, reports on special projects, leadership roles, work experience, and community involvement. This is an opportunity for the applicant to convey specific career plans relating to a particular area of interest. This only applies to the academic scholarship/awards and summer internship applications. 2.5.3 Evidence of academic achievement (including rank in class, if available) is an important factor; therefore, a transcript of recent academic record and current GPA is required. The institution should describe the grading system for student performance. 2.5.4 Applications should include two (2) official Recommendation Forms from educators or employers. 2.5.5 Applicants must submit four (4) photo copies of their completed application information. This includes ALL information (with the exception of sealed Recommendation Forms) which is to be considered by the Selection Committee (i.e. Application Form, typed essays, transcripts with official copy, etc.). 2.6 Travel Assistance, Publicity, Reporting 2.6.1 Recipients of the NACE Foundation scholarships/awards are also eligible to apply for Travel Assistance for travel-related expenses to accept their award. For more information on Travel Assistance, click here.2.6.2 If the academic scholarship/award recipient is already enrolled in the NACE Student Poster Session and has requested Travel Assistance, there is no need to reapply for assistance. Only one application per applicant is accepted. 2.6.3 Suitable press releases and announcements in Materials Performance, and the Final NACE Annual Conference Program will also be prepared by NACE Foundation staff in conjunction with the FSSAG Chairman. 2.6.4 Upon acceptance, all scholarship/award recipients must submit a current color photograph of themselves to the NACE Foundation, which will be used for publicity purposes. 2.6.5 The academic scholarship/award recipient shall submit a letter report to the FSSAG Chairman and the NACE Foundation one year after reception of the scholarship describing how scholarship monies were utilized and how the award aided their education. 2.7 Application Deadlines 2.7.1 2008 NACE Foundation Academic Scholarship/Award applications must be received at NACE Headquarters no later than December 1.
