NACE Detroit Section
Academic Scholarship

Both the NACE Foundation and the NACE Detroit Section are committed to encouraging and assisting the most qualified and brightest students as they reach for their career goals and ambitions.

This year, the NACE Foundation will award the following on behalf of the NACE Detroit Section:

• Two (2) academic scholarships in the amount of $1,000
  • One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a candidate who is a member or related through family to a NACE Detroit Section member.
  • One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a candidate who is referred through a NACE Detroit Section member.

The scholarship recipients will be notified no later than October 10, 2008. Winners will be awarded the scholarship at the October NACE Detroit Section meeting. It would be preferred if the winners could attend this meeting but if circumstances prevent this, awards will be forwarded. Awards will be mailed directly to your college/university and applied to your tuition.

2.1 Application Guidelines

2.1.2 Applications should include two (2) official Recommendation Forms from educators or employers, along with a letter of recommendation from the referring NACE Detroit Section member.

2.1.3 A 500-750 word essay about corrosion and the effect on you and your environment. (The topic should deal with corrosion in your interested area of studies.) Suggested topic material can be found on the NACE Web site.

2.1.4 An official transcript from the student's high school or college/university or letter of acceptance. The institution should describe the grading system for student performance.

2.1.5 All academic scholarships may be awarded for a second year, but priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a NACE Detroit Section Scholarship.

2.1.6 Upon acceptance, all scholarship recipients must submit a current color photograph of themselves to the NACE Foundation, which will be used for publicity purposes

2.1.7 Suitable press releases and announcements in CORROSION, Materials Performance or other NACE publications will be prepared by the NACE Foundation.

2.1.8 The NACE Detroit Section Scholarship recipient(s) shall submit a report to the NACE Foundation and the NACE Detroit Section one year after reception of the scholarship, describing how scholarship monies were utilized and how the award aided their education.

2.2 Eligibility Requirements

2.2.1 The student must be a member, related or referred by a member of NACE International, Detroit Section that is in good standing.

2.2.2 The student must be accepted to an accredited college/university and working toward a degree in Engineering or Sciences.

2.2.3 The scholarship recipient must maintain full-time status at an accredited college/university.

2.2.4 The student must have and maintain a GPA of 2.75 or higher.

2.2.5 Post-docs are not eligible.

2.2.6 The NACE Detroit Section scholarship is to be used exclusively for costs associated with educational expenses.

2.3 Selection Criteria

2.3.1 The following criteria will be assessed by the Selection Committee appointed by the NACE Foundation to select recipients of the academic scholarships:

• Academic record, including official transcript with description of school's grading system
• Personal and/or professional activities, in and out of school
• Detailed work experience (if applicable), particularly if related to corrosion work and activities
• Description of past/current/future research plans
• A 500-750 word essay about corrosion and the effect on you and your environment
• Two letters of recommendation from teachers or employers with whom the applicant has worked
• A letter of recommendation from the referring NACE Detroit Section member

2.4 Application Deadlines

2.4.1 Academic scholarship applications must be received at NACE Headquarters and postmarked no later than September 17, 2008.
