2.1 Process Overview

2.1.1 The monetary value and number of each book scholarship/award available will be determined by the NACE Foundation by September 1 each year prior to Annual Conference.

2.1.2 The NACE Foundation will specify the distribution of available scholarship/awards on their Web site by October 1 each year, prior to Annual Conference

2.1.3 The NACE Foundation Student Scholarship/Award Group (FSSAG) initiates a Selection Committee for scholarships and awards offered by NACE.

2.1.4 Upon receipt of the applications (and after passage of the deadline for receipt), NACE Foundation staff will send applications to FSSAG members. The FSSAG will review the applications and select recipients based on number of scholarship/awards available and the quality of the applicants.

2.1.5 One alternate recipient may be chosen in the case that an applicant later becomes ineligible.

2.2 Type of Award

2.2.1 NACE Foundation Book Scholarship/Award

  • Funding is available to graduate students in the form of a credit at the NACE on-line bookstore to establish or augment their personal library in corrosion-related subjects.
  • An applicant will be evaluated on the strength of his/her academic record and two recommendations, one of which should be from a corrosion professional with whom the applicant has worked.
  • The book scholarship/award recipients will submit a letter report to the FSSAG Chairman and the NACE Foundation within one year after the initiation of the scholarship which shall document how the scholarship monies were utilized.

2.3 Selection Criteria

2.3.1 The following criteria will be assessed in an application by the FSSAG to select the recipients of the academic book scholarships:

  • Academic record, including a description of the school's grading system for student performance to help the FSSAG evaluators
  • Professional and personal activities
  • Detailed work experience particularly if related to corrosion work and activities
  • Description of past/current/future research plans. Graduate students should describe their research project, focusing on their role.
  • Personal Profile Statement
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (for academic scholarships, one must be from a corrosion professional with whom the applicant has worked)

2.4 Eligibility Qualifications

2.4.1 Both North American (Northern, Eastern, Central, and Western Areas designated by NACE) and International (Europe, West Asia/Africa, East Asia/Pacific Rim, Latin America) students are eligible.

2.4.2 Eligibility requires that applicants be graduate students.

2.4.3 Post-docs are not eligible.

2.4.4 Relatives of members of the FSSAG or of the funding committee/Foundation are not eligible.

2.4.5 The NACE academic scholarship/awards are not intended to replace stipends or other financial support provided to students for their education by industry, universities, or other organizations.

2.4.6 Funding recipients may apply for subsequent NACE Foundation scholarships/awards, but priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received funding from the NACE Foundation.

2.4.7 Applicants for the NACE Foundation Book Scholarship/Award must reside and attend a college/university in a country which the NACE Foundation may legally support. Any countries sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/) or individuals included on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) or Blocked Persons list are excluded from eligibility

2.5 Application Guidelines

2.5.1 Applications for academic scholarships are to be completed by the students themselves. Applicants must submit their typed information on the official forms listed below. A form may be downloaded from this site as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file or as an MS Word Document.

2.5.2 Evidence of academic achievement (including rank in class, if available) is an important factor; therefore, a transcript or facsimile of recent academic record and current GPA is required. The institution should describe the grading system for student performance.

2.5.3 Applications should include two (2) official Recommendation Forms from educators or employers.

2.5.4 Applicants must submit four (4) photo copies of their completed application information. This includes ALL information (with the exception of sealed Recommendation Forms) which is to be considered by the Selection Committee (i.e. Application Form, transcripts with official copy, etc.). Photocopies of the application forms may be reproduced locally.

2.6 Travel Assistance, Publicity, Reporting

2.6.1 Recipients of the NACE Foundation book scholarship/awards are also eligible to apply for travel assistance for travel-related expenses to accept their award. For more information on travel assistance, click here.

2.6.2 If the academic scholarship recipient is already enrolled in the NACE Student Poster Session and has requested Travel Assistance, there is no need to reapply for assistance. Only one application per student is accepted for Travel Assistance.

2.6.3 Suitable press releases and announcements in CORROSION, Materials Performance, and the NACE Annual Conference Final Program will also be prepared by NACE Foundation staff in conjunction with the FSSAG Chairman.

2.6.4 Upon acceptance, all scholarship recipients must submit a current color photograph of themselves to the NACE Foundation, which will be used for publicity purposes.

2.6.5 The book scholarship/award recipients shall submit a letter report to the FSSAG Chairman and the NACE Foundation within one year after the initiation of the book scholarship which states how the scholarship/award has enhanced their graduate education
