NACE/ONR Research Grant

ONR LogoBackground

For the past 30 years, the NACE Research Committee, at the direction of the NACE Board of Directors, has funded Research Seed Grants at universities not actively engaged in corrosion research. The grants are funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and NACE International. The major purpose of the Seed Grants is to foster an interest in corrosion research at universities and, through initial funding, provide a base for attracting additional research support and interest in corrosion from industry and government sources.

NACE International's Research Committee is will solicit research proposals in fall 2007 for up to two (2) $20,000 grants. The grant period will be from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009, and each grant could be extended for one additional year.

Funding

Funding is currently at the rate of $20,000/year per Seed Grant. Funding of any given Seed Grant is limited to two successive years.

Proposal Guidelines

Proposals should include the following information:

  • a description of the proposed research project, including goals and specific objectives;
  • a description of how the grant might be used to obtain additional support from other organizations;
  • background on the principal investigator;
  • a proposed budget (funds may not be used to support university indirect costs/overhead); and
  • a description of other programs under way that might strengthen the proposal.

*Appendices may be attached, but brevity is encouraged.

The grants may be extended for one additional year. The requirements for the extension of a grant are satisfactory progress, submission of a progress report six months after the initiation of the grant, and the submission of a brief renewal proposal six months after the initiation of the grant outlining the next year's research work.

The original and five copies of the proposal should be sent no later than January 18, 2008 to: , Technical Liaison/Editor, NACE International, Research Committee Seed Grant Program, 1440 South Creek Drive, Houston, TX 77084-4906. Proposals may also be submitted electronically to .

Grant recipients will be selected at CORROSION/2008, NACE's Annual Conference, to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Notification

The Research Committee advertises the availability of NACE Seed Grants in NACE technical journals and solicits proposals from professors interested in initiating corrosion research. These solicitations are handled by NACE Headquarters staff and are sent to heads of departments in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

In addition, the same solicitation is sent to the chairman of each local NACE Section and each NACE Specific Technology Group to generate interest within NACE. The solicitation describes the purpose of the Seed Grant, lists the amount of funding and period of performance, gives the submission date deadlines and where to send the proposal, defines maximum length of the proposal (number of pages), and gives the four criteria for judging of the proposal, namely:

1. Involvement of new personnel in the field of corrosion research;
2. New and novel approaches for attacking corrosion problems;
3. Inclusion of engineering materials and environments which fall within the broad definition of "corrosion";
4. Prevention of corrosion as a major objective of the proposed research.
