In 2005, the NACE Foundation introduced an educational, hands-on corrosion curriculum to teachers that is designed to challenge and inspire high school students to learn more about corrosion science and engineering. The roots of this program stemmed from a partnership created in 2004 with the ASM Materials Education Foundation. The first ASM Materials Camp was held in August of 2004 on the University of Houston campus in Houston, Texas. (Click here to learn more about this event.)
Now an official collaborator with ASM, the NACE Foundation sponsors numerous week-long workshops that provided hands-on experience to assist teachers in using applied engineering techniques in the classroom. Teachers who take part in these workshop receive a comprehensive series of low/no cost laboratory demonstrations in applied science to use in chemistry, physics, math, technology and industrial arts. In addition, they leave with a much greater appreciation for the importance of corrosion science and its impact on every day life.
The Corrosion Toolkit (cKit) educational program was launched at the first ASM Materials CampsSM Teachers in June, 2005. It consists of a series of challenging experiments as well as the recommended curriculum for easy implementation into the classroom teaching program. All of this information is provided in the form of a toolkit, which contains all the necessary components for the classroom experiments (curriculum, experiments, solutions, etc.).
The Foundation would like to thank Carboline for sponsoring this worthy program! Also, Carboline has issued a direct challenge for other companies in the corrosion industry to match their financial commitment.
