to Excite and Educate Young People
in Math and Science

The NACE Foundation began their partnership in 2004 with the ASM Materials Education Foundation on the first ASM Materials Camp — Teachers in Houston. The camp was held at the University of Houston campus on August 2-6, 2004. It was targeted at high school teachers with emphasis on “exciting young people” in math and science. This week long workshop gave teachers hands-on experience to use applied engineering techniques in the classroom. Participating teachers from Texas and throughout the Southwest received a comprehensive series of low/no cost laboratory demonstrations in applied science to use in chemistry, physics, math, technology and industrial arts. They left the workshop with a greater appreciation for the importance of these materials to modern life.

Shown with them (left to right) are Chuck Hayes, Executive Director of the ASM Foundation, Aziz Asphahani, Board of Directors member for NACE Foundation and ASM Foundation, Elaine Bowman, NACE Foundtion board member and Don Diamond, ASM member.

Terry May, the NACE Foundation President, was an active participant in this camp. He gave a two-hour interactive presentation on corrosion to the teachers participating in the camp. His presentation was well received and a lengthy question & answer session followed. Copies of the Inspector Protector Story Book were distributed and welcomed by the captive audience.

In addition, the Houston Section donated $1,000.00 to sponsor 2 teachers to this camp and the NACE Foundation presented $50.00 gift certificates to the 22 teachers who were in attendance. The donation was graciously accepted by the teachers who noted they will be using it to buy needed science supplies for their students. The participation of the NACE Foundation was well received and they have announced future partnerships with ASM on the 14 remaining materials camps around the US and Canada.

There have been many ASM Materials Camps throughout the past year in different locations throughout the US and Canada. Previous camps have been held at McMaster University in Canada, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Washington State, Washington, D.C. and coming soon in California. In 2005, there are discussions regarding an ASM Materials Camp in Bombay, India! The NACE Foundation is a strong advocate of the ASM Materials Camp and will focus on increasing its support and commitment to future materials camps in the US and around the world.

It is the primary mission of the NACE Foundation to actively seek out similar partnerships which will help educate and excite students and the public about corrosion science and engineering.
