Scholarship Recipient

This scholarship was created to recognize outstanding students in the San Juan Basin who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of corrosion science and engineering.  Both the Sandia Mountain Section and the NACE Foundation are committed to encouraging and assisting the most qualified and brightest students as they reach for their career goals and ambitions.

We recognize that students pursuing corrosion, science or engineering education programs today are our potential corrosion industry experts of tomorrow!

This year, the NACE Foundation awarded (1) $1,000 scholarship to the following student:

The Sandia Mountain Section Scholarship was awarded at the NACE Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. 

1 Process Overview
1.1 The monetary value and number of each academic scholarship available will be determined by the NACE Foundation by September 1 each year prior to the annual conference.

1.2 The NACE Foundation will assemble a Selection Committee for each scholarship and award offered.

1.3 Upon receipt of the applications, and after passage of the deadline, NACE Foundation staff will send applications to Selection Committee members for review.  The Selection Committee will discuss applicants and select a recipient based on the number of available scholarships and the quality of the applicants.

1.4 One alternate recipient may be chosen in the event the recipient later becomes ineligible

2 Selection Criteria
2.1 The following criteria will be assessed by the Selection Committee during application review:

  • Academic record, including a description of the school's grading system for student performance to assist evaluators
  • Professional and personal activities
  • Detailed work experience particularly if related to corrosion work and activities 
  • Description of past/current/future research plans (Graduate students, in particular, should describe their research project, focusing on their role)
  • Personal profile statement
  • Two letters of recommendation from educators or employers with whom the applicant has worked

3 Eligibility Qualifications
3.1 Students eligible for this scholarship must be enrolled full-time in an accredited, degree-granting college or university located in one of the two oil and natural gas producing U.S. states that make up the San Juan Basin. These two states are respectively: Colorado and New Mexico.

3.2 The scholarships will be awarded to applicants pursuing a career in the sciences and/or engineering or other majors relating to corrosion or corrosion control. Scholarship winners shall have a serious interest in full-time professional employment in the corrosion industry upon graduation and shall show promise of a productive future as a technically trained professional.

3.3 Graduate and post-doctorate students are not eligible.

3.4 Relatives of Selection Committee members or NACE Foundation staff are not eligible.

3.5 This scholarship is not intended to replace stipends or other financial support provided to students for their education by industry, universities, or other organizations.

3.6 Scholarship monies must be used exclusively for costs associated with collegiate educational expenses. Such costs include: tuition or tuition loans, books, college fees, computer / computer software (if directly related to the student's education in the sciences), etc. Personal items such as clothing, travel, automobiles, gasoline, etc., do not apply.

3.7 Recipients may apply for subsequent NACE Foundation scholarships, but priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received funding from the NACE Foundation.

3.8 Applicants must reside and attend a college/university in a country which the NACE Foundation may legally support. Any countries sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/) or individuals included on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) or Blocked Persons lists are excluded from eligibility.

3.9 If, in the judgment of the Selection Committee, no applications of adequate merit are received, the NACE Foundation may refrain from recommending that any of the applications be selected for a scholarship award in any given year.

4 Application Guidelines
4.1 Applications are to be completed by the students themselves. Applicants must submit their typed information on the official forms listed below. A form may be downloaded from this site as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file or as an MS Word Document.

4.2 Personal Profile Statement:  In addition to information requested on the Application Form, applicants must attach an individual statement of 500 words or less, typed, double-spaced, describing career plans, reports on special projects, leadership roles, work experience, and community involvement. This is an opportunity to convey specific career plans relating to a particular area of interest.

4.3 Evidence of academic achievement is an important factor; therefore, a transcript of recent academic record and current GPA is required. The institution should describe the grading system for student performance.

4.4 Applications should include two (2) official Recommendation Forms from educators and/or employers.  These forms may be received by the student or may be sent directly to the NACE Foundation from the educator or employer.

4.5 Applicants must submit one (1) copy of their completed application. This includes ALL information (with the exception of sealed Recommendation Forms) which is to be considered by the Selection Committee (i.e. Application Form, typed essays, transcripts with official copy, etc.).

5 Travel Assistance, Publicity, Reporting
5.1 Recipients of the NACE Foundation scholarships are also eligible to apply for Travel Assistance for travel-related expenses to accept their award in person at the NACE Annual Conference. For more information on Travel Assistance, click here.

5.2 If the scholarship recipient is already enrolled in the NACE Student Poster Session and has requested Travel Assistance, there is no need to reapply for assistance. Only one application per applicant is accepted.

5.3 Suitable press releases and announcements in Materials Performance, and the Final NACE Annual Conference Program will also be prepared by NACE Foundation staff.

5.4 Upon acceptance, all scholarship recipients must submit a current color photograph of themselves to the NACE Foundation, which will be used for publicity purposes.

5.5 The recipient shall submit a letter report to the NACE Foundation within one year of receipt of the scholarship describing how scholarship monies were utilized and how the award aided their education.

6 Application Deadlines
6.1 Applications for the Sandia Mountain Section Academic Scholarship must be received at NACE Headquarters no later than January 1, 2010. Send all required materials to:
