2009 NACE Academic
Scholarship Recipient

 Pouria Ghods,
Carleton University,
Ottawa, Ontario

The NACE Foundation has designed its academic scholarship program for students interested in pursuing an education in the field of corrosion science and engineering.

This year, the NACE Foundation will distribute the following:

  • One (1) academic scholarship in the amount of $5,000 (undergraduate / graduate)

The NACE Foundation Academic Scholarship will be awarded at the NACE Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.  Scholarship recipients are encouraged, but not required, to attend the annual conference to receive their award in person.

1. Process Overview
1.1 The monetary value and number of each academic scholarship/award available will be determined by the NACE Foundation by September 1 each year prior to Annual Conference.

1.2 The NACE Foundation will specify the distribution of available scholarships on their Web site by October 1 each year, prior to Annual Conference.

1.3 The NACE Foundation will initiate a Selection Committee for scholarships and awards offered by the Foundation.

1.4 Upon receipt of the applications (and after passage of the deadline for receipt), NACE Foundation staff will send applications to Selection Committee members. The Selection Committee will review the applications and select recipients based on number of scholarships available and the quality of the applicants.

1.5 One alternate recipient may be chosen in the case that an applicant later becomes ineligible.

2. Type of Award
2.1 NACE Foundation Academic Scholarship

  • Funding is available to undergraduate or graduate university students. Priority is given to candidates who have prior work experience in the field of corrosion.
  • An applicant will be evaluated on the strength of his/her academic record and two recommendations, one of which should be from a corrosion professional with whom the applicant has worked.
  • The academic scholarship recipient will submit a letter report to the NACE Foundation within one year after the initiation of the scholarship which shall document how the scholarship monies were utilized.

3. Selection Criteria
3.1 The following criteria will be assessed in an application by the Selection Committee to select the recipient of the academic scholarships:

  • Academic record, including a description of the school's grading system for student performance to help evaluators
  • Professional and personal activities
  • Detailed work experience particularly if related to corrosion work and activities
  • Description of past/current/future research plans
  • Personal Profile Statement
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (for academic scholarships, one must be from a corrosion professional with whom the applicant has worked)

4. Eligibility Qualifications
4.1 Eligibility requires that applicants be enrolled full time in an undergraduate or graduate program engaged in science and/or engineering related to the study of corrosion or corrosion control in an accredited college or university. Students enrolled in 2-year or junior colleges are eligible to apply.

4.2 Post-doctorate students are not eligible.

4.3 Relatives of members of the Selection Committee or of the funding committee/Foundation are not eligible.

4.4 The NACE Academic Scholarship is not intended to replace stipends or other financial support provided to students for their education by industry, universities, or other organizations.

4.5 The NACE Academic Scholarship must be used exclusively for costs associated with collegiate educational expenses. Such costs include: tuition or tuition loans, books, college fees, computer / computer software (if directly related to the student's education in the sciences), etc. Personal items such as clothing, travel, automobiles, gasoline, etc., do not apply.

4.6 Funding recipients may apply for subsequent NACE Foundation scholarships, but priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received funding from the NACE Foundation.

4.7 Applicants for the NACE Foundation Academic Scholarships must reside and attend a college/university in a country which the NACE Foundation may legally support. Any countries sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/) or individuals included on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) or Blocked Persons lists are excluded from eligibility.

5. Application Guidelines
5.1 Applications for academic scholarships are to be completed by the students themselves. Applicants must submit their typed information on the official forms listed below. A form may be downloaded from this site as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file or as an MS Word Document.

5.2 Personal Profile Statement. In addition to information requested on the Application Forms, student applicants must attach an individual statement of 500 words or less, typed, double-spaced, describing career plans, reports on special projects, leadership roles, work experience, and community involvement. This is an opportunity for the applicant to convey specific career plans relating to a particular area of interest.

5.3 Evidence of academic achievement (including rank in class, if available) is an important factor; therefore, a transcript of recent academic record and current GPA is required. The institution should describe the grading system for student performance.

5.4 Applications should include two (2) official Recommendation Forms from educators and/or employers.

5.5 Applicants must submit one (1) copy of their completed application. This includes ALL information (with the exception of sealed Recommendation Forms) which is to be considered by the Selection Committee (i.e. Application Form, typed essays, transcripts with official copy, etc.).

6. Travel Assistance, Publicity, Reporting
6.1 Recipients of the NACE Foundation scholarships are also eligible to apply for Travel Assistance for travel-related expenses to accept their award in person at the NACE Annual Conference. For more information on Travel Assistance, click here.

6.2 If the academic scholarship recipient is already enrolled in the NACE Student Poster Session and has requested Travel Assistance, there is no need to reapply. Only one application per student is accepted.

6.3 Suitable press releases and announcements in Materials Performance, and the Final NACE Annual Conference Program will also be prepared by NACE Foundation staff.

6.4 Upon acceptance, all scholarship recipients must submit a current color photograph of themselves to the NACE Foundation, which will be used for publicity purposes.

6.5 The academic scholarship recipient shall submit a letter report to the NACE Foundation within one year of receipt of the scholarship describing how scholarship monies were utilized and how the award aided their education.
