Each year the NACE Foundation administers a scholarship in Cathodic Protection on behalf of the Schmoldt Foundation for Education.
This year, the NACE Foundation awarded (1) one scholarship in the amount of $6,450 to the following student, on behalf of the Schmoldt Foundation:

This scholarship was awarded at the NACE Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.
In addition to the scholarship award, the NACE Foundation and Schmoldt Foundation for Education reimburse all travel expenses for the scholarship recipient to be publicly recognized at the NACE Annual Conference. Travel-related expenses include transportation, hotel, per-diem meal allowance, registration, banquet ticket, and a one-year student membership in NACE International.
1 Eligibility
1.1 The candidate must have completed a minimum eight-week internship in the field of Cathodic Protection prior to receipt of the scholarship award. Alternately, the applicant may complete his/her internship within the second calendar year period following award of the scholarship. (The NACE Foundation will attempt to assist the scholarship recipient, to a limited degree, with locating summer internship employment; however, it is ultimately the responsibility of the recipient to secure such employment.)
- A few examples of such cathodic protection internships may be in the field of construction, field surveying, equipment maintenance, materials and equipment manufacturing, office procedures, hands-on maintenance, or any combination thereof.
1.2 Eligibility to apply for the annual scholarship is open to any full-time undergraduate or post-graduate student who is enrolled at any accredited college or university worldwide.
1.3 Candidate selection will include consideration of academic achievement, professional and personal activities, work experience, leadership, and letters of reference.
2 Application Requirements
2.1 Applicants must submit their typed information on the official Application Form.
2.2 The candidate must submit a description of documented previous work experience, personal activities, and leadership on the official Work Experience Form.
2.3 The candidate must also submit three (3) official Recommendation Forms, as letters of reference from educators or employers.
2.4 Applications should include a transcript of recent academic record and current grade point average.
2.5 Applicants must attach a 100-word essay documenting their interests, skills, specific achievements and work experience learned in their Cathodic Protection summer internship (if applicable).
2.6 All applicants are encouraged to become NACE Student Members. Students not currently holding membership may enclose with their scholarship application a completed NACE Student Membership Application (PDF) with dues payment.
2.7 Recipients of this scholarship are directed to use it only for direct costs associated with their college education. Such costs are: tuition, books, pay off student educational loans, college fees, computer / computer software (if it can be shown it was directly related to the student's education in the sciences). Personal items such as clothing, travel, automobiles, gasoline, etc do not apply.
2.8 Within one (1) year of acceptance of this scholarship, the recipient must submit a letter report to the NACE Foundation describing how the funds were utilized and how they aided in the student's overall education.
3 Selection Process
3.1 The NACE Foundation will appoint a Selection Committee consisting of up to five (5) Cathodic Protection professionals (either registered professional engineers or NACE certified Cathodic Protection Specialists) who are actively engaged in the field of Cathodic Protection.
3.2 The Selection Committee will review all applications and submit their recommendation to the NACE Foundation.
3.3 The Selection Committee will be comprised of a Chairman and up to four (4) Committee Members. It is the responsibility of the Chairman to call to order all official meetings and assist in locating new members to the Committee.
4 Voting Process
4.1 In the event of a tie, or non consensus vote, each member of the Selection Committee will be given a total of 30 points to use in their selection process of the candidates. The points shall be distributed by the Committee Member amongst the candidates.
- No more than 10 points can be given to any one candidate.
- If there are less than a total of four candidates, then all 30 points do not need to be distributed.
4.2 Once this process is completed, the Committee Chair will tabulate the total votes and announce the winning candidate.
5 Travel Assistance
5.1 The recipient is encouraged to attend the NACE Annual Conference to receive their award in person. If the recipient has prior knowledge that they are unable to attend at the time of their application, they must indicate this on their application and list the reason(s) why they will not be able to attend and they will still be considered for the scholarship.
5.2 The recipient will be provided with a reimbursement of travel expenses to attend the NACE Annual Conference.
5.3 Expense items must be approved by the NACE Foundation prior to their purchase (ie: airfare, hotel estimates).
5.4 Expense items must be economy rate or equivalent.
5.5 Per diem meal allowance shall not exceed $50.00/day.
5.6 All reimbursements must be submitted to the NACE Foundation with original receipts.
5.7 Hotel stay not to exceed 2-night stay and must be scheduled during conference dates. (Information on housing will be available on the NACE web site in October 2009.)
6 Publicity, Reporting
6.1 Upon acceptance, all scholarship recipients must submit a current color photograph of themselves to the NACE Foundation, which will be used for publicity purposes.
6.2 Suitable press releases and announcements in Materials Performance, and the Final NACE Annual Conference Program will be prepared by NACE Foundation staff.
6.3 The recipient shall submit a letter report to the NACE Foundation within one year of receipt of the scholarship describing how scholarship monies were utilized and how the award aided their education.
7 Application Deadlines
