This scholarship was created to recognize outstanding students with a
permanent residence within the NACE Eastern Area who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of science and/or engineering. Both the NACE Foundation and the Eastern Area are committed to encouraging and assisting the most qualified and brightest students as they reach for their career goals and ambitions.
This year, the NACE Foundation awarded $3,000 to the following student on behalf of the NACE Eastern Area:

The NACE Eastern Area Academic Scholarship was awarded at the NACE Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas on March 17, 2010.
1 Procedures
1.1 The NACE Foundation shall initiate a Selection Committee for scholarships offered by the Foundation to review applications and qualifications and select scholarship recipients.
1.2 Upon receipt of the applications (and after passage of the deadline for receipt), the NACE Foundation staff liaison will send applications to all Selection Committee members. The Selection Committee will review the applications and select recipients based on the number of scholarships available and the quality of the applicants.
1.3 One alternate recipient may be chosen in the case that an applicant later becomes ineligible or cannot accept the scholarship in person.
2 Type of Award
2.1 NACE Eastern Area Academic Scholarship
The NACE Foundation administers this scholarship on behalf of the NACE Eastern Area as follows:
- Funding is available to undergraduate students enrolled full-time in an accredited Engineering or Physical Science degree program.
- An applicant will be evaluated on the strength of his/her academic record and two recommendations from educators or employers.
- The academic scholarship recipient will submit a report to the NACE Foundation within one year after the initiation of the scholarship which shall document how the scholarship monies were utilized.
3 Selection Criteria
3.1 The following criteria will be assessed by the Selection Committee when reviewing academic scholarship applications:
- Academic record, including a description of the school's grading system for student performance to help evaluators
- Professional and personal activities
- Detailed work experience particularly if related to corrosion work and activities
- Description of past/current/future research plans
- Personal Profile Statement
- Two Letters of Recommendation from educators or employers
4 Eligibility Qualifications
4.1 Students eligible for this scholarship must have a permanent address (not school address) that lies within the boundaries of the Eastern Area. This includes: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Indiana (except the following counties: La Grange, Steuben, DeKalb, Noble, Elkhart, Kosciusko, Fulton, Cass, White, Pulaski, Marshall, St. Joseph, LaPorte, Clinton, Tippecanoe, Warren, Montgomery, Benton, Vermillon, Jasper, Lake, Starke, Porter, Newton and Parke), Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan (except the following counties: Berrient, Cass and Van Buren), Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia.
4.2 Eligibility requires that applicants be enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program engaged in Engineering and/or Physical Science. Students enrolled in 2-year or junior colleges are eligible to apply.
4.3 Post-doctorate students are not eligible.
4.4 Relatives of members of the Selection Committee or the Foundation are not eligible to apply.
4.5 The NACE Eastern Area Academic Scholarship is not intended to replace stipends or other financial support provided to students for their education by industry, universities, or other organizations.
4.6 The NACE Eastern Area Academic Scholarship must be used exclusively for costs associated with collegiate educational expenses. Such costs include: tuition or tuition loans, books, college fees, computer / computer software (if it can be shown it was directly related to the student's education in the sciences), etc. Personal items such as clothing, travel, automobiles, gasoline, etc., do not apply.
4.7 Funding recipients may apply for subsequent NACE Foundation scholarships, but priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received funding from the NACE Foundation.
4.8 Applicants for the NACE Eastern Area Academic Scholarship must reside and attend a college/university in a country which the NACE Foundation may legally support. Any countries sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/) or individuals included on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) or Blocked Persons list are excluded from eligibility.
5 Application Guidelines
2.5.1 Applications for academic scholarships are to be completed by the students themselves. Applicants must submit their typed information on the official forms listed below. A form may be downloaded from this site as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file or as an MS Word Document.
5.2 Personal Profile Statement. In addition to information requested on the Application Forms, student applicants must attach an individual statement of 500 words or less, typed, double-spaced, describing career plans, reports on special projects, leadership roles, work experience, and community involvement. This is an opportunity for the applicant to convey specific career plans relating to a particular area of interest.
5.3 Evidence of academic achievement (including rank in class, if available) is an important factor; therefore, a transcript or facsimile of recent academic record and current GPA is required. The institution should describe the grading system to evaluate student performance.
5.4 Applications should include two (2) official Recommendation Forms from educators or employers.
5.5 Applicants must submit one (1) copy of their completed application information. This includes ALL information (with the exception of sealed Recommendation Forms) which is to be considered by the selection committee (i.e. Application Form, typed essays, transcripts with official copy, etc.). Photocopies of the application forms may be reproduced locally.
6 Travel Assistance, Publicity, Reporting
2.6.1 Recipients of the NACE Eastern Area Academic Scholarship are also eligible to apply for travel assistance for travel-related expenses to accept their award in person at the NACE annual conference. For more information on travel assistance, click here.
6.2 If the academic scholarship recipient is already enrolled in the NACE Student Poster Session and has requested Travel Assistance, there is no need to reapply. Only one application per student is accepted.
6.3 Suitable press releases and announcements in Materials Performance, and the Final NACE Annual Conference Program and on the NACE Foundation web site will also be prepared by NACE Foundation staff.
6.4 Upon acceptance, all scholarship recipients must submit a current color photograph of themselves to the NACE Foundation, which will be used for publicity purposes.
6.5 The academic scholarship recipients shall submit a letter report to the NACE Foundation within one year after reception of the scholarship describing how scholarship monies were utilized and how the award aided their education.
7 Application Deadlines
7.1 Applications for the 2010 NACE Eastern Area Academic Scholarship must be received at NACE Headquarters no later than January 1.
